Updated: Jul 5, 2022

Nettle aka "Stinging nettle" is known best to hikers and outdoors people as the plant to avoid touching by all means necessary. Nettle leaves contain many extremely fine sharp hairs. When you touch the leaves the hairs inject irritants into the skin, causing a swollen, itchy, red rash. No FUN.....RIGHT? Well, i think i'm safe in saying rashes are never fun in any circumstances. However here on the homestead we see tremendous value in this plant and think nettle is awesome in so many ways!! Who would have known the famous "stinging plant" would have so many medicinal values? Not only for your bodies health, nettle benefits the health of the garden and the entire homestead. For starts we harvest & dry nettle to make a tincture that helps combat seasonal allergies. The goal is to take the tincture daily and over time build up natural antihistamines which allow you to tolerate seasonal histamines better. It's also a biodynamic compost additive that boost nitrogen. This activates the compost pile, speeding up the composting process and helps in the formation of humus. Other ways to use nettle is simply cook it with other greens and enjoy, dry it out n steep it as tea, or even capsulate it. It can be used to help detox due to its wide range of beneficial nutrients. It helps improve nutrient uptake, it can improve feminine health, promoting relief from cramps & bloating and minimizes blood flow due to its astringent capabilities. It helps to prevent kidney stones, is good for prostate health and is an anti-inflammatory. Nettle can ease respiratory issues and even lower blood pressure. This wonderful plant has been known to help control blood sugar and aids in skin care and healthier hair. We grow our nettle on the homestead and harvest with gloves and long sleeve shirts. Just pick a place with lower human traffic, or put it where you don't want human traffic,...., like under your teenagers window.... lol. Plant nettle in well drained soil, and provide plenty of water. Did you know once nettle is dried or cooked it no longer can hurt you....Yup! Thats right! Funking Outstanding! Now, go get yourself some nettle seeds and pick a spot on your homestead because every homestead needs itself some good ol' fashioned "stinging Nettle"!
