St. John wort is a plant that originated in Europe. Here on the Homestead we are blessed to have this wonderful plant growing wild. It blooms yellow star shaped flowers in late June that are medicinal in many ways. Saint John Wort is named after John the Baptist from the Bible and tends to bloom right around the same time as the feast day of "Saint John the Baptist" . This God-given medicine contains many chemicals that act on messengers in the brain that regulate mood. People commonly use St. John wort for depression, anxiety, mood disorders, menopause, inflammation, and relief from nerve damage. Today, on the homestead, I wildcrafted some St. John wort & made a batch of alcohol based tincture In hopes to gain relief from a pinched nerve in my shoulder. Stay tuned to see if it works for me. When harvesting St. John wort only take the top 4-6 inches of plant during bloom or right around the 24th of June when blooms begin. Now, I rinsed in water with added citric acid to help get the lil garden crawlers free from the material. Next I dried by shaking casually and placed on a towel. Here on the Homestead I keep 200 proof organic ethanol for our Tincture making needs. I had to dilute my 200 proof alcohol with one equal part water to make it 100 proof alcohol. Once I had my 100 proof alcohol I chopped up the 87 grams X 3 equaling 261grams of plant material and tossed it in a 2 quart jar. Next, I poured the 100 proof alcohol over the plant material to a level of 1500 ml. This gives me the 5:1 alcohol:plant material thats best for tinctures of St John Wort. Then, I sealed the jar with a piece of parchment paper under the lid to stop corrosion. I labeled the jar and placed on the window sill allowing the sun to penetrate the jar for one month. After thirty days I will strain through a coffee filter, bottle, and use up to 900 mg daily for up to 12 weeks. St. John wort by itself is likely safe when used in doses under 900 mg daily for up to 12 weeks. Use caution and do your research if using with other drugs as there could be serious adverse reactions when mixed. Well, thanks for visiting the site and reading the blog.
